Desowen Ointment steroid treats the inflammation and itching caused by many skin conditions, such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis.

Use Desowen Ointment only as directed by your doctor. This medicine should come with a patient information leaflet. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

This medicine is for use on the skin only. Do not get it into your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. Please do not use it on skin areas that have cuts, scrapes, or burns. If it does get on these areas, rinse it off right away with water.

To use the ointment:

• Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine.
• Apply a thin layer of this medicine to the affected skin area. Rub it in gently.
• Do not bandage or otherwise wrap the skin being treated unless directed to do so by your doctor.
• If the medicine is applied to the diaper area of an infant, do not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Before using Desowen Ointment, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you are allergic to desonide, other medications, or any of the ingredients in desonide topical products,
• You plan to take prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products.
• Be sure to mention the following: other corticosteroid medications and other topical medications.
• If you have or have ever had diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, or liver problems,
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using desonide, call your doctor.
• If you have dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you use this product.

Common side effects of Desowen Ointment include burning, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, peeling, or redness. These side effects should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to Desowen Ointment. Other side effects of this medication include:

• scaly skin,
• thinning or softening of your skin,
• skin rash or irritation around your mouth,
• swollen hair follicles,
• changes in the color of treated skin,
• blisters,
• pimples,
• crusting of treated skin, or
• stretch marks.

Tell your doctor if you have signs of absorbing Desowen Ointment through your skin, including:

• blurred vision, or seeing halos around lights,
• mood changes,
• sleep problems (insomnia),
• weight gain,
• puffiness in your face,
• muscle weakness, or
• feeling tired.

How long should you use Desowen Ointment?

Your skin condition should improve during the first two weeks of your treatment. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve during this time.
