What is Xifaxan?

  • Xifaxan is taken orally either with or without food.
  • When prescribed to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, this medication is usually taken twice daily.
  • If prescribed for traveler’s diarrhea, Xifaxan is usually taken every 8 hours and you should continue to take the entire prescribed amount of this medication, even if symptoms have disappeared.
  • If prescribed for IBS treatment, Xifaxan is normally taken 3 times a day for 14 days.

Also be aware that:

  • Xifaxan can cause live bacterial vaccines including as typhoid vaccine to be less effective.

The side effects of Xifaxan

Common side effects of Xifaxan may include but are not limited to:

  • Headaches,
  • Nausea, feeling tired or dizziness.
  • Swelling of the hands or feet.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following Xifaxan side effects:

  • Severe stomach pain.
  • Bloody or watery diarrhea. Tell your doctor even if this happens months after your last dose.
  • A fluid buildup around the stomach such as rapid gain, stomach pain, bloating or breathing problems when lying down.
