ZETIA is the brand name of the cholesterol-lowering medication, ezetimibe, which stops the intestine from absorbing cholesterol. This medication is commonly used to lower the amount of cholesterol that the body absorbs in patients who have high cholesterol. Zetia could be prescribed and taken with other medications that lower cholesterol levels. However, some cholesterol medications could potentially have a negative reaction with Zetia , so you should carefully follow your doctor’s orders. Taking Zetia is only part of the treatment to lower cholesterol, as it must be used together healthy changes to your lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, and weight management. Your doctor may prescribe Zetia by itself or with a statin drug. People with high cholesterol undergo a process known as atherosclerosis, which is when your body begins to store cholesterol and fats by the walls of the blood vessels, decreasing the blood flow. In result, the oxygen to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body is cut short, which could result in angina, strokes, and heart attacks or heart failure. Zetia lowers the levels of cholesterol and fats in the blood, which could reduce the likeliness of these heart conditions occurring.
The usual dosing instructions for Zetia is to take it once a day at the same time each day, but you should always follow the instructions prescribed for you by your doctor. Do not take this medication more or less often or longer than prescribed.
Zetia is allowed to be taken with or without food and in combination with statin drugs such as fluvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, lovastatin, or atorvastatin.
Be advised that it could potentially take up to two weeks for any signs of improvement to your cholesterol levels. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Zetia as directed as you will need to measure your cholesterol levels with routine blood tests.
Keep this medication in a dry and cool environment, out of the reach of children and pets.
Zetia is not right for you if: you suffer from moderate to severe liver disease or if you are allergic to ezetimibe.
Do not take Zetia with other cholesterol medicine such as Zocor, Lipitor, or Crestor if you currently have liver disease, you are pregnant or nursing a baby.
There is not enough clear evidence to whether Zetia alone could pose harm to an unborn child. It should be an important practice to use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy during treatment with ezetimibe alongside a statin drug. There is also not enough clear evidence to whether Zetia passes through to breast milk or if it could pose a threat of harm to a nursing child, so it is important not to nurse your child during treatment with ezetimibe alongside a statin drug.
If you have any health problems, it is important to let your doctor know before starting treatment to ensure ZETIA is safe for you to take.
In some cases, Zetia could cause kidney failure that resulted from a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This is more often seen in older adults and people who have kidney disease or people with an underactive thyroid. If you are currently taking cholestyramine, colestipol, or colesevelam, take Zetia four hours prior to taking any of these medications or two hours after.
Seek emergency medical assistance if you have an allergic reaction while taking Zetia. These symptoms include, but are not limited to: hives, breathing difficulties, face swelling, lips swelling, tongue swelling, or throat swelling.
Tell your doctor as soon as you notice any extreme muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness alongside a high fever, fatigue, and dark urine.
It is more likely that older patients will see side effects to Zetia, but they are still a possibility for everyone. These side effects may include but are not limited to: muscle or joint pain, congested nose, sinus pain, sore throat, diarrhea, or pain in limbs.
Please note that this is in no way a full list of side effects of Zetia and you may experience others. If this happens, seek medical assistance at once.
I forgot to take today’s dose. What should I do?
If you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s close to taking your next dose. In that case, just skip the missed dose as you should not try to make any missed doses.
Should I avoid any foods while taking Zetia?
Yes. Zetia will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol levels if you do not stay away from eating food that are rich in fat or high in cholesterol.
